Tomb Chamber

In the sarcophagus chamber, veterans hold ceremonies on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, placing memorial wreaths by the red marble grave marker. On the back wall is inscribed "Now he belongs to the ages," the remark attributed to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton at Lincoln's passing.

Lincoln's body rests in a reinforced concrete vault beneath the floor, a precaution taken by his son Robert following an attempt to steal the body. In the opposite wall are crypts for Lincoln's wife and three sons. His eldest son Robert lies buried in Arlington National Cemetery, at the direction of Robert's widow.
