Businessman William T. Rawleigh donated the statue to the city of Freeport,
where it stands in a park on the city's outskirts. The community has an additional
Lincoln statue at the actual debate site. Sculptor Leonard Crunelle also created
the heroic-sized work of Lincoln the Captain in Dixon, Illinois.Crunelle Statue in

The northern Illinois town of Freeport hosted the second and most famous
of the seven Lincoln-Douglas political debates on August 27, 1858. This
bronze statue, called "Lincoln the Debater," marks the 71st anniversary of
the event.
