Crunelle Statue in Freeport, Illinois

The northern Illinois town of Freeport hosted the second and most famous of the seven Lincoln-Douglas political debates on August 27, 1858. This bronze statue, called "Lincoln the Debater," marks the 71st anniversary of the event.

Businessman William T. Rawleigh donated the statue to the city of Freeport, where it stands in a park on the city's outskirts. The community has an additional Lincoln statue at the actual debate site. Sculptor Leonard Crunelle also created the heroic-sized work of Lincoln the Captain in Dixon, Illinois.
