Lincoln is depicted in 1861 as president-elect, draped in one of his
trademark shawls, about to leave his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. His
famous Farewell Address appears on the wall behind him. In it he
commends his fellow townspeople to God and asks them to pray for him.
Artistic symbols of Lincoln's life and family have been incorporated
into the statue's surroundings. Part of the cost was covered by a
bequest to the cathedral from Lincoln's descendants.
