The Temporary Vault

On December 21, 1865, the coffins of Abraham Lincoln and his sons William and Edward were moved to a temporary vault on the hillside above the Oak Ridge Cemetery public receiving vault. The granite marker in the foreground shows the vault's location; beyond it is the back of the permanent tomb, which had not yet been built.

Their remains rested here until September 19, 1871, when they were transferred to the partially constructed permanent monument. They joined the coffin of Lincoln's youngest son Thomas (Tad), who was buried on July 17, 1871, the first family member to be placed in the new tomb.
