Robert Lincoln's Bedroom

Robert, the eldest Lincoln son, used a bedroom on the southwest corner of the second floor. He was born in Springfield in 1843 and by 1859 attended prep school in Exeter, New Hampshire.

When Abraham Lincoln left Illinois for the White House in 1861, Robert was a freshman at Harvard College. As the sole surviving son of the Lincolns, he inherited the Springfield home which he gave to the State of Illinois in 1887. During the 1909 centennial year of his father's birth he paid a return visit to the house.
