Gage Statue in
Topeka, Kansas
On the grounds of the Kansas statehouse you will encounter this statue
of a seated Lincoln. Merrell Gage of Topeka designed this bronze work,
which was introduced to the public on February 12, 1918. Gage also created
the famous pioneer woman statue located nearby and a seated statue of
Lincoln as a young man displayed at Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois.
Seated statues of Lincoln are more unusual than standing ones,
and they tend to invite more public involvement. The sculptor intended
this pose to convey a sense of approachability and friendliness. It's
easy to imagine that Lincoln is listening intently to
an imaginary audience.
