The stone attempted to link the lives of Lincoln and Servius Tullius,
an ancient king who supposedly gave the plebeians of Rome
the rights of citizenship. President Lincoln received the stone before
his death in 1865, but it did not arrive in Springfield until U.S.
Representative Shelby Cullom sent it there during the tomb's construction.Servius Tullius Stone
Below the Lincoln statue you can see a small, irregular stone
from a Roman tomb bearing a Latin inscription. The translation reads,
"To Abraham Lincoln, President for the second time of the American Republic,
citizens of Rome present this stone from the wall of Servius Tullius by which
the memory of each of those brave advocates of liberty may be associated."
